Advanced Interventional Oncology for Targeted Cancer Treatment
- Interventional oncology is one of the most promising fields in modern cancer care. It focuses on treating tumours using minimally invasive, image-guided procedures that target the cancer directly while protecting healthy tissues. These treatments kill tumor cells, reduce symptoms, and improve quality of life, especially in patients who are not candidates for surgery or who need additional support alongside chemotherapy or radiation. In certain cancers, interventional procedures provide COMPLETE CURE from cancer and considered the primary modality for treatment, like hepatocellular carcinoma.
- Interventional cancer care works by using real-time imaging to reach the tumour through a tiny pinhole entry. Depending on the type and location of the cancer, different techniques may be used. Thermal ablation treatments like radiofrequency ablation, microwave ablation, or cryoablation destroy tumour cells by heating or freezing them from within. These procedures are highly precise and allow patients to recover quickly. They are especially useful for liver, lung, kidney, and bone tumours.
- Transarterial therapies offer another powerful option. Procedures such as TACE, Drug-Eluting Bead TACE, Balloon TACE and Radioembolisation (TARE) deliver treatment directly to the blood vessels feeding the tumour. By blocking the tumour’s blood supply and releasing medication inside it, these treatments limit cancer growth with fewer systemic side effects. They are commonly used for liver cancers and metastases that are difficult to treat surgically.
- Interventional oncology also supports patients by relieving symptoms caused by cancer. Procedures like nerve blocks, stent placement to open blocked pathways, or draining fluid collections can significantly improve comfort and daily functioning. Each treatment is personalised based on the tumour type, stage, and patient’s overall health.
- Most interventional oncology procedures are performed under local anaesthesia or light sedation, through a tiny puncture, and without the need for open surgery. Recovery is usually quick, and patients can return to routine activities sooner than with traditional surgical methods.
- If you or a loved one has been diagnosed with cancer and are exploring treatment options, meet an Interventional Radiologist to discuss all available options. Interventional oncology offers targeted, minimally invasive solutions that can support tumour control, enhance quality of life, and work alongside other cancer treatments to provide a more comprehensive approach to care.
- Uterine fibroids are common benign growths in the uterus that can cause a wide range of symptoms — from heavy menstrual bleeding and pelvic pain to bloating and pressure on the bladder or bowel. Many women are told surgery is the only answer, but that’s not always the case. Uterine Fibroid Embolisation (UFE) is a safe, effective, and uterus-preserving option that treats fibroids without the need for hysterectomy or myomectomy.
- This procedure is performed through a tiny puncture in the groin or wrist. Using real-time imaging, a thin catheter is guided into the uterine arteries that supply the fibroids. Once in position, small particles are delivered to block blood flow to the fibroids. Without a blood supply, the fibroids gradually shrink, and symptoms begin to improve in the weeks and months that follow.
- UFE is ideal for women who wish to avoid major surgery, retain their uterus, or need a faster recovery. It can also be considered for patients who are not suitable for surgery due to medical conditions or personal preferences. Most procedures are done under local anaesthesia with sedation, and patients usually return home the same day or after an overnight stay. Compared to surgical options, UFE involves less pain, fewer complications, and a significantly shorter recovery period.
- Patients often report a noticeable improvement in symptoms within the first two to three menstrual cycles. The fibroids continue to shrink over time, and in most cases, the results are long-lasting. UFE does not involve any surgical cuts or stitches, and the uterus remains structurally intact. While fertility after UFE is possible, it is a topic best discussed during consultation, based on individual goals and medical factors.
- If you’ve been advised to undergo surgery for fibroids, or are seeking a second opinion, UFE may offer the clarity and comfort you’re looking for. With the right guidance, you can make an informed decision that prioritises both your health and your preferences.
